Before and Above Us is a film about the skies, how we look up, what comes down, and the quiet invasion that challenges the order. Beginning with historical sound recordings sourced from different public and military archives, cinematic images are reconstructed within computer-generated environments, gradually transforming as real events and digital architecture merge into pictorial compositions. The buzzing of drones cuts through gusts of wind and rises into the humming pressure of police helicopters, while the film slides from the amateur footage to a militarized tone, suggesting a quiet uprising, with the butterflies as unsettling moderators. Oddly spectral and too fragile to threaten, like they know something we don’t, the invasion of butterflies is persistent. Hovering over moments suspended between wonder and dread, facts shift into abstraction, echoing a larger ecological response, a collective recalling that resists a single point of view.
